The YMCA has been a local community supporter in neighbourhoods all over Canada, and for more than 160 years the YMCA of Greater Toronto has offered children, teens, adults and families the opportunity for personal growth, community involvement, and leadership. One of the YMCA’s newest contributions to the downtown Toronto core will be located on the second and thirds floors of Waterworks – located at 505 Richmond Street West.

The 54,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art McDonald Family Richmond Street YMCA will include a swimming pool, gymnasium, conditioning space and a number of studios that will offer members a variety of fitness classes based on the needs of the community as well as opportunities for members of all ages to enjoy sports like basketball, soccer, badminton and other based on community input.

The Y has played an important historical role in the development of Toronto as the first multi-purpose centre, Shaftesbury Hall, was officially opened by the Toronto YMCA on February 10, 1873. Today, the YMCA is more than just a gym – it’s a “Centre of Community”, which makes it the perfect contribution to Waterworks whose goals also reflect creating a central hub within the community.

Offering an opportunity to live a healthy lifestyle both in body, mind and spirit, the YMCA offers people in the community a network of support to help them reach their goals. “The vision that inspires everything the YMCA of Greater Toronto does is that our communities can and will be home to the healthiest children, teens and young adults”, says Antoine Tedesco, Public Relations Manager, YMCA GTA.
